Space Frame Structures
Description
A space frame structure is a rigid, lightweight, three-dimensional truss system made of interlocking linear struts and joints arranged in geometric patterns.
• 3D Load Distribution: Unlike 2D trusses, space frames distribute weight and external forces (like wind or snow) across the entire network in all three dimensions through pure tension (pulling) and compression (pushing).
• No Interior Columns: Their inherent rigidity allows them to span massive open areas without needing internal load-bearing support.
• Geometric Units: They typically use repeating shapes like tetrahedrons (pyramids), cubes, and octahedrons for maximum structural stability.
Common Applications
• Large sports stadiums and arenas
• Airport terminals and aircraft hangars
• Exhibition halls and grand atriums
• Industrial warehouse roofs and gas station canopies
